Okee, Wisconsin is in southwest Columbia County, with town limits residing on Lake Wisconsin. Okee is an unincorporated community that is part of the town of Lodi. Lake Wisconsin is formed by a dam placed on the Wisconsin River at Prairie du Sac to the southwest, off this map. There is a car ferry that travels across the lake to the small town of Merrimac, which is in Sauk County.
Fitz’s on the Lake is a great little restaurant on the shore of Lake Wisconsin with its own docks. This is a look at the lake from Fitz’s. Fitz’s is on Hwy 113 and kept on this road to the northwest to get to the Merrimac Ferry. It was a short ride but fun.
That’s Merrimac on the other side. She is now returning to Okee. The Merrimac Ferry is Wisconsin’s only free ferry, open 24-7 until ice forms on the river. She holds 15 vehicles along with bicycles and pedestrians. The cross takes about seven minutes. In 2012, she ferried over 280,000 vehicles across. She began operations in 1844, long before there were roads.
I took my car onto the ferry on he Okee side. Nice view as we pulled out of port!
So we’re out on Lake Wisconsin.
