Boulder Junction is a town way up north, in the state's Northwoods in Vilas County. The area encompasses the basin of the Trout and Manitowish Rivers, which flow eventually into the Flambeau River. Much of the town is covered by the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. The town prides itself in being the Musky Capital of the world. It's a favorite area for tourists and sportsmen, a great getaway spot, any time of the year.

This is very typical of the quaint shops in Boulder Junction. I visited in 2012 and at the time the Alpine Shop was on the left and Peabody's Interior Decorators on the right. I have now learned that the Boulder Junction Trading Company is on the right and occupies about two-thirds of the building. It carries clothing by Victoria along with jewelry and purses, and an eclectic mix of lodge décor, antiques, gourmet food, wine, candy, children’s toys and more.
Another interesting set. To the left is the Dancing Bear Coffee and Gifts shop, again occupying about one-third of the building. The right portion was occupied by JJ's Pub and Grill and then Jake's Tap. The property has been a landmark in Boulder Junction for over 100 years, offering drinks and food, but my information is that it is now for sale.
There are many more shops and my next visit I must photograph them and add them to this collection. Boulder Junction is fun.
Now, if you're running a tourist town in Wisconsin's Northwoods, you are going to have plenty of first class restaurants and taverns.
This is the Boulder Beer Bar & Restaurant, famous for its smoked meats such as pulled smoked chicken, pulled smoked pork, smoked ribs and smoked chicken wings along with all kinds of other foods including Wisconsin's famous Walleye.
The town's Veteran's Memorial, quite close to the Boulder Beer Bar & Restaurant. I think the Vets would like that!
Here's another, the Headwaters Restaurant & Tavern, the largest restaurant in Boulder Junction. It first opened in 1926 and was purchased by Terry Freund in 1996 who has been operating it since. It boasts to using the top quality cuts of meat grilled to your satisfaction. The restaurant overlooks Manitowish Waters, and is located two blocks from downtown Boulder Junction.
And we've got one more. The welcome sign at Goochs A-One Bar and Grill is a welcoming one indeed. You cannot miss it. You know you are up in Wisconsin’s northlands when you get here. My wife knew it as the Shrimp when her family came to its cabin up here in summers. I walked inside and found one of the more delightful paces I’ve seen up in these parts. I knew the nano-second I walked in this was my kind of place. Gooch’s had a real nice lunch crowd, great people, all enjoying their meals and camaraderie.
My wife knew about the place from her younger days so we went inside. Wow, what a sight to see!
If you are a wild-life lover, and you like great food, great people, and a nice cool one, this is the place for you. Let me show you just a few of the animals mounted on the walls. You could depend some tie just walking around and looking at them. To see more, go to our story, “Gooch’s A-One Bar & Grill, Boulder.”
